Mohammed Afar, the resident of Aleppo area in Syria is 11 years old. The modified Kalashnikov assault rifle he carries stretches to more than half of his height. Over the top of his faded yellow jacket a Free Syrian Army (FSA) vest holds three extra clips, each full with live ammunition, and a walkie-talkie. An FSA badge sits on one side and a rendering of the Islamic Shahada, in Arabic calligraphy, on the other. He says he does not miss school or want to stay at home with his mother and two sisters. “I want to stay as a fighter until Bashar is killed,” he says, referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The fighters surrounding him, all claiming to be from Liwa al-Tawhid, pass him a sniper rifle and offer to take him to a frontline, so he can demonstrate his shooting. The father of the boy, Mohammed Saleh Afar refers to his son as “ great shot” and “a little lion.” Over the course of its grinding 21- month insurgency, Syria’s children have endured numerous abuses. Caught-up in shelling, airstrikes, and sniping, they have additionally been subject to arbitrary arrest, torture and rape, as reported by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria in August; which, additionally, noted “with concern reports that children under 18 are fighting and performing auxiliary roles for anti-Government armed groups.” Both the Geneva Conventions and the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Children carry provisions that call for not using combatants under the age of 15, while the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute makes it a war crime. Mohammed quickly disengages his magazine and presents it, before skillfully reinserting it, but not chambering a round. The older fighters surrounding him – some of whom are little more than boys themselves – praise his speed and mirror his father’s earlier statements, calling him a “good shot.” He says he admires the fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra – composed of hardline Islamists subscribing to Takfiri ideology – and recently designated a foreign terrorist organization by the United States. Al-Nusra have proven effective in battle, winning itself scores of supporters. Many of its fighters previously cut their teeth on other frontlines of the global jihad – notably Iraq and Afghanistan, but also throughout Central Asia and the Middle East. The group’s rise has imbued the opposition with an unmistakable Islamicist hue while raising fears of a sectarian bloodbath in the event that Assad falls: Syria is home to Sunni, Alawite, Druze, Christians and Yazidi. “They [Jabhat al-Nusra] know Islam and Sharia. They know what it means to be a Muslim,” Mohammed “When my father goes to the frontline, he takes me with him,” says Mohammed. “He says to be careful and we find a safe place to shoot from.” According to a November Human Rights Watch report, some opposition groups fighting in Syria “are using children for combat and other military purposes.” “Even when children volunteer to fight, commanders have a responsibility to protect them by turning them away,” said its children’s researcher, Priyanka Motaparthy, in the report. “Children are easily influenced by older relatives and friends, but their participation in armed hostilities places them in grave danger of being killed, permanently disabled, or severely traumatized.” Yet Mohammed’s father – his long and graying beard styled in the fashion favored by religiously conservative Salafists – sees little wrong with his son’s participation. “I put my trust in God,” he says. The other members of the unit agree. The 11-year-old is kept safe, they claim, and never taken to frontlines that are too dangerous. “There are other boys fighting too,” Mohammed says. “Some, but not much.”

Last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta, became the first President in the history of Africa to marshal all the 54 nations in Africa with the aim of amending an international statute at the International Criminal Court (ICC). According to a secret annual journal published by the White House last week, US President Barrack Obama described Uhuru as an “African leader who is loved by all Africans”. He said the African Union (AU)’s support for his case at the ICC is a good indication that Uhuru may onetime become one of the greatest leaders in Africa. “Europe has Winston Churchill, America has George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Russia has Stalin and Khrushchev and Africa in the next decade will have its pairs of great leaders,” Obama wrote in the journal. “It is not easy to marshal the whole content to support your course. He is a leader that the world deserves,” Obama added. He also said that Kenya’s President possesses an extra-ordinary quality of leadership which is hard to get in a dozen of leaders all over the world. He also said he was moved when he saw South African citizens cheering Uhuru during Mandela’s requiem mass last year. “He was an ICC indictee and he managed to beat his political rivals. That is a show of commitment and hard work,” Obama said.

According to a court ruling, you can now masturbate publicly without facing any charges in Sweden. A recent court ruling in Sweden’s Södertörn District Court suggests that masturbating on the beach in Sweden is “OK,” according to public prosecutor Olof Vrethammar. Vrethammar was prosecuting a 65-year- old who was charged with sexual assault after getting literally caught with his pants down in June, giving himself a hand on a the Drevviken beach in Stockholm. A ruling which acquitted the man of the sex assault charges this week found that although he was publicly masturbating, he was not directing his actions at anyone in particular. At an estimated 160 years of age, Dhaqabo Ebba, a retired farmer and well-known community elder from the Oromia region in Ethiopia, could be the oldest living person ever. In an interview conducted by the state-run TV Oromiya and published online on Aug. 12, 2013, Ebba — who has no birth certificate to prove his exact age — says he has lived through and witnessed a transfer of power among all of the five Gadaa Oromo political parties in four rotations. As per the Gadaa system of government, a democratic socio-political institution of the Oromo people, one Gadaa leader serves for a period of eight years. There are five Gadaa parties within this system among which leadership rotates. If Ebba had indeed lived through four such rotations, that makes him at least 160 years old. The average life expectancy in Ethiopia is 60 years, according to the CIA’s World Factbook. It would be impossible to establish Ebba’s age as birth takes place at home in rural Ethiopia and the majority of Ethiopians still do not own birth certificates. “When Italy [first] invaded Ethiopia [in 1895], I had two wives and my son was old enough to herd cattle,” Ebba tells the reporter in Afan Oromo, the Oromo language, at his house near Dodola town. There are no living witnesses to corroborate his story. “Not even one of my peers is alive today,” says Ebba. However, Ebba who claims to have the largest extended family in the area has seen his great- grandchildren grow up. And he is by far the oldest known person in the area. Ebba lives in a one-room house constructed by tightly woven bamboo poles which are intricately fastened together. Its corrugated metal roof, clinched together with nails, covers a cleanly swept dirt floor where Ebba and neighbors were huddled together for the interview. According to Guinness World Records, Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at 122 years and 164 days, is the oldest person with a verified age. Earlier this month, the Associated Press reported, Bolivia’s Carmelo Flores could be the world’s oldest manat 123 years. Ebba’s Story If true, Ebba’s story may change that. Born sometime in the 1850s, had there been better communications, Ebba would remember the Berlin Conference of 1884 that set the stage for European colonization of Africa. Within the context of Ethiopian history, he was born before the conquest of Oromo country by Abyssinian invaders. In his own account, Ebba has lived under the reigns of at least seven Ethiopian rulers starting from Emperor Yohannes IV to the current regime, the EPRDF. The Oromo are Ethiopia’s single largest ethnic group, estimated at 40 percent of the total population. Largely marginalized, they fought against all seven rulers that Eba has outlived during Ethiopia’s imperial expansion to the south from its northern highlands. During the 30-minute interview, Ebba recalls life under previous Ethiopian rulers — and notes a relative improvement for his community under EPRDF, particularly in areas of road transportation and telecommunication. He says in his generation it took eight days on horseback to visit Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, some 240 kms away from his village. Today, it only takes a couple of hours. Ebba speaks with a firm, articulate voice while recounting his life story. He may no longer be able to see but his memories of historical facts seem sharp. As the local journalist noted at the end the interview, given that the Oromo like many African cultures are an oral society, “each time an elder dies, a library is lost.” Ebba’s is one such library from which much can still be preserved. Kidnapping for ransom which has remained the quickest means of making money among criminals within the South-East zone has taken a new dimension as some dubious people now hide under the evil practice to dupe their wealthy relations. One casket ( coffin) dealer from Nigeria was arrested by operatives of Anti-Kidnapping Unit at weekend, for attempting to dupe his brothers of N2 million under the guise that he was abducted by kidnappers. The guy allegedly hid himself in a bush behind his shop for six days and alerted his brothers that he was in a kidnappers’ den. The state Police Public Relations Officer,, who confirmed the arrest, yesterday, said the suspect “never knew that his sin shall find him.” He said: “the suspect hid himself in a bush behind his shop for six days from where he was making phone calls to his two younger brothers in a very convincing tone that he had been abducted and that N2 million was required to get him out of the kidnappers’ den or else he would be killed. ”Following this, the case was reported to the state police command who mobilised its anti- kidnapping unit to rescue the victim. When the suspect intensified his call that the purported kidnappers were on the verge of killing him if his people could not bring the ransom, he later reduced the ransom to N1.2 million. “Some money was then deposited into the account number provided by the purported kidnappers and a certain girl who went to cash the initial N100,000 on August 29, 2013 was arrested by the operatives. ”The girl was identified as a fiancee to the suspect “When interrogated the lady, said that the account belongs to her but was instructed by her fiancee to supply the account number so that his brothers can pay the ransom via the account and that she was to cash it as soon as she receives alert of the payment and bring it to him.” The police spokesman said the lady's confession, however, led to the arrest of the suspect, who said he was not kidnapped but maintained that he kidnapped himself so that his wealthy younger brothers could pay ransom which he would use to sort out his business dealings. He said apart from the trick he adopted, nothing would make his brothers give him any monetary assistance even though he regretted his actions. He admitted that the step he took was not good in the sight of God, man or law and pleaded for forgiveness. He said he is a father of five children but never revealed to his accomplice and fiancee that he was married as he had promised to marry her. Asked if he was not making ends meet from the construction and sale of coffins,He said he made low sales, and that he decided to trick the brothers to get money from them to address his immediate challenges which required huge amount of money.

A teenager beat airline and airport security at the Benin Airport and sneaked into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane, where he flew safely to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Saturday morning. There was, however, pandemonium at the airside of the Lagos airport when passengers disembarking from the aircraft saw the teenager as he emerged from the undercarriage (aircraft tyre hole) to join fellow travellers. The adolescent stowaway, was immediately arrested by security officials at the airport. The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria said full and urgent investigation had commenced into the mysterious circumstances that led to the huge breach in airport and airline security, the situation has continued to beat the imagination of aviation authorities in the country. The situation, which has become a major source of worry among the authorities, has also led to blame game between the authorities that led to the stowaway of a teenage boy on its aircraft at the Benin Airport.” In a statement signed by authorities said, “Arik Air acted with impunity by not stopping the aircraft to check when the crew and ground personnel’s attention was drawn to an abnormality on the tarmac.” According to the FAAN spokesman, the procedure for such infraction is for the crew to abort the flight and return for check-up. He blamed the airline for the alleged impunity, warning that the airport authority would not tolerate such infraction from any operator. He said, “This is errant display of impunity. The aircraft should not have taxied further, but return to the apron until a proper check is carried out on all parts of the aircraft. FAAN will not tolerate such impunity henceforth from Arik or any airline. Any violation would be met with applicable sanctions. Dati, however, said the teenager was already giving useful information to unravel this ‘misnomer.’ In a swift reaction, Arik, in a statement, blamed FAAN for the huge breach in security, noting that the incessant cases of security breaches at the nation’s airport had become a major source of concern to the airline. The statement quoted Arik’s Managing Director, Mr. Chris Ndulue, as saying, “We are worried by the incessant security lapses at our airports. We are appealing to the management of FAAN to immediately address the problem. “The management of Arik Air has expressed shock over the incident, wondering how the teenager beat the aviation security personnel at the Benin Airport to get to the runway.” Arik said its pilot had reported to the control tower the presence of a strange boy in the bush about 200 – 300 metres at the end of runway before leaving the airport. Ndulue said the control tower had told its pilot that they were sending security men to the place to arrest the boy. Ndulue, however, said, “As the captain was making his final turn, preparatory for take- off, a cabin crew called his attention to the information by some of the passengers that they saw a boy running towards the airplane. The First Officer confirmed that they had observed it earlier and alerted the control tower which responded that they had sent the patrol team to arrest the boy. The captain again reported to the control tower and was informed that the situation was under control and that he had been cleared for take-off. “On arrival at the domestic wing of MMA, Lagos, a teenage boy, who apparently had sneaked into the aircraft main wheel well jumped out and was arrested by Arik personnel and handed over to FAAN security.” The Arik aircraft with registration number, 5N-MJG Flight 44, which left the Benin Airport around 9am for Lagos, was said to have on board top officials of the Edo State Government. A passenger aboard the flight, who spoke with Sunday Punch on the telephone said, “We felt the signs in Benin when the plane was about leaving and as it was moving slowly, we heard a loud noise as if the tyre crushed somebody on the ground and we all started shouting. It means the boy was already inside that tyre compartment before we left. We left for Lagos, but when we landed at Lagos Airport, the boy came out from the tyre hole, everybody started shouting. “But speaking seriously, this shows that we have a serious problem as regards securing our airports. This is a serious security breach. If that boy was carrying bomb, it means he would have succeeded in blowing up the plane. How can somebody be in an aircraft without being detected; we are in trouble in this country.” Though no official at the Benin Airport volunteered comment on the issue, it was gathered that the teenager may have gained entrance into the airport from the Akenzua road axis, where perimeter fencing is non-existent at different points. In 2010, a desperate young Nigerian, Emeka Okechukwu Okeke, who tried to smuggle himself to the United States, died in the tyre compartment of a Delta Airlines aircraft and was discovered on arrival in New York. Okeke, sneaked into the place at Lagos airport. In 2012, the dead body of a young Nigerian man was also discovered in the wheel well, the undercarriage compartment of a domestic airline, after it returned from South Africa...'' The footage shows a naked man with a ‘Baller Boyz’ sticker on his bare chest. Baller Boyz then proceeds to take off his boxer shorts, leaving him stark naked – apart from his boots, gloves and helmet. Since it was uploaded on December 15, the footage has had nearly 200,000 hits. The mystery rider’s journey seemed to be the result of a Facebook bet. He had put a photo on the social networking site, saying he would ride naked through Munster’s Christmas market if the picture got 1,000 ‘Likes’. However, not everyone was impressed by his antics, and the police are now investigating the incident.

Zachary Reyna, a 12-year-old Florida boy stricken with a brain-eating parasite, has died, according to a post Saturday on a Facebook page that’s been providing detailed updates from the boy’s family. The post indicated that the LaBelle child died Saturday afternoon. “The battle is over for Zac but he won the war,” the post concluded. About an hour later, a new message said that a ventilator was being used so that the boy’s organs could be donated, adding that family and friends can visit him at Miami Children’s Hospital during visiting hours Sunday. “Even though Zac has passed, he will still be saving many lives,” this new post said. Doctors had given Zachary an experimental drug to treat the rare amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, that he had. This same drug was used to treat 12- year-old Kali Hardig recently in Arkansas, after which she became only the third person in the last 50 years known to survive the deadly parasite. Zachary’s family told CNN affiliate WBBH they believe that the boy — who they described as an active seventh-grader – was infected while knee boarding with friends in a water-filled ditch by his house on August 3. After he was hospitalized, the boy underwent brain surgery, and doctors diagnosed him with primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, according to WBBH. After news emerged regarding Zachary’s diagnosis, the Florida Department of Health issued a warning to swimmers that high water temperatures and low water levels provide the perfect breeding ground for this rare amoeba. Between 2001 and 2010, there were only 32 reported cases of people getting Naegleria fowleri in the United States, according to the CDC. Most of the cases have been in the Southeast. Naegleria fowleri is found in hot springs and warm freshwater, most often in the Southeastern United States. The amoeba enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain. A Chinese man held his girlfriend hostage on rooftop after her parents reportedly refused to approve their marriage. Indications of breast cancer other than a lump may include thickening different from the other breast tissue, one breast becominglarger or lower, a nipple changing position or shape or becoming inverted, skin puckering or dimpling, a rash on or around a nipple, discharge from nipple/s, constant pain in part of the breast or armpit, and swelling beneath the armpit or around the collarbone. [ 11 ] Pain (" mastodynia ") is an unreliable tool in determining the presence or absence of breast cancer, but may be indicative of other breast health issues. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] [ 12 ] Inflammatory breast cancer is a particular type of breast cancer which can pose a substantial diagnostic challenge. Symptoms may resemble a breast inflammation and mayinclude itching, pain, swelling, nipple inversion, warmth and redness throughout the breast, as well as an orange-peel texture to the skin referred to as peau d'orange ; [ 9 ] the absence of a discernible lump delays detection dangerously. Another reported symptom complex of breastcancer is Paget's disease of the breast . This syndrome presents as eczematoid skin changes such as redness and mild flaking of the nipple skin. As Paget's advances, symptoms may include tingling, itching, increased sensitivity, burning, and pain. There may also be discharge from the nipple.Approximately half of women diagnosed with Paget's also have a lump in the breast. [ 13 ] In rare cases, what initially appears as a fibroadenoma (hard movable lump) could in fact be a phyllodes tumor. Phyllodes tumors are formed within the stroma (connective tissue) of the breast and contain glandular as well as stromal tissue. Phyllodes tumors are not staged in the usual sense; they are classified on the basis of their appearance under the microscope as benign, borderline, or malignant. [ 14 ] Occasionally, breast cancer presents as metastatic disease, that is, cancer that has spread beyond the original organ. Metastaticbreast cancer will cause symptoms that depend on the location of metastasis. Common sites of metastasis include bone, liver, lung and brain. [ 15 ] Unexplained weight loss can occasionally herald an occultbreast cancer, as can symptoms of fevers or chills. Bone or joint pains can sometimes be manifestations of metastatic breast cancer, as can jaundice or neurological symptoms. These symptoms are called non-specific , meaning they could be manifestations of many other illnesses. [ 16 ] Most symptoms of breast disorders, including most lumps, do not turn out to represent underlying breast cancer. Less than 20% of lumps for example are cancer [ 17 ] and benign breast diseases such as mastitis and fibroadenoma of the breast are more common causes of breast disorder symptoms. Nevertheless, the appearance of a new symptom should be taken seriously by both patients and their doctors, because of the possibility of an underlying breast cancer at almost any age. [ 18 ]

To understand the incentives that drive citizens who vote and the politicians who seek their votes, we may need to appreciate the lessons of evolutionary psychology especially in regard to male-female sexual relations. (I am sorry for gay couples as this theory may not apply to them). Men want sex from women so as to pass on their genes. Women want love from men in form of physical protection and material provision over a long period of time to ensure the growth and survival of their off springs. To get sex, men must demonstrate (or at least fake) love. Men do this by demonstrating a desire for long term commitment, exhibiting material resources and the willingness to use these resources to support the woman and her offspring. But it also works the other way round. For women to get love and these material benefits, they must give men sex. How these conflicting objectives are resolved explains human reproductive success. Just imagine our ancestors of tens of thousands of years ago from whom we have inherited our current sexual psychology. Every act of sex, however reckless (like cheating with a married woman) gives a man an opportunity to sire a child. So the more sexual opportunities with different sex partners our ancestral grandfathers had, the higher was the chance of them producing many offspring and therefore leaving behind a rich genetic legacy. Yet this was the opposite for our ancestral grandmothers. Every irresponsible act of sex by a woman may leave her pregnant without a committed partner to care for her and her off-spring. She could end up without a man to gather food, hunt wild game, or protect her and the child from wild animals and rapists. So a woman’s reproductive success depended on having sex with a man willing to build a relationship based on long-term commitment. Yet if women have to trade sex for love, then men have an incentive to pretend to be loving, generous and committed. Once a man has enjoyed himself, he can walk away from the relationship. To limit such opportunistic behavior by amorous men, women evolved mental skills to read men’s intentions. A woman can detect whether a man is seeking a long term commitment or is merely an opportunist seeking a short term sexual liaison. One method of testing to confirm a man’s intentions is to play delaying tactics; women tend to withhold sex to test a man’s commitment. Men in turn evolved copying mechanisms. The best way to get sex from women, men had to go beyond faking love and commitment (as fakes could be detected) to actually evolving these qualities; the better to get sexual benefits. Evolution is therefore an arms race between men seeking to exhibit love and generosity and women evolving faculties to detect pretenders and liars. What we got as a byproduct of the man’s selfish pursuit of sex was the evolution of commitment and love. The resolution of this evolutionary puzzle offers us insights into politics. Politicians are power seeking entrepreneurs; so they are essentially selfish. But to get power in a democracy, they need to win votes of the majority. So they must ingratiate themselves with voters. By championing popular causes, they can win the hearts and minds of many. Problem is that voters are not stupid. They know (or suspect) that politicians will fake public spiritedness to get votes and once in office, do little or nothing. Voters also know that the private returns to individual politicians (in form of improved status, income, prestige, etc) are high relative to the societal gains that come as benefits of public policy. Voters have incentives to withhold support from politicians until they demonstrate – over a period of time – their commitment to the public good. In rich countries, it is a politician’s record with different groups – labour unions, professional associations, business groups etc that gives them advantage in elections. In Uganda (and other poor countries) the test of a politician’s public spiritedness is his/her involvement in community development work (like contributing to the building churches, clinics, schools and bridges) and in cultural activities (like attending clan meetings, funerals and weddings). Such a record carries the needed reputational capital for the politician that they have a genuine interest in the welfare of the community. Yet all too often, the politicians who win elections are not the ones who have been involved in such community work. So why do people sometimes vote for urbanites who clearly come during election time for votes. Here, the role of bribery becomes critical. Voters insist to be paid in advance for their vote. Candidates will distribute essential commodities such as sugar; soap, alcohol and salt to the electorate, a factor that makes democratic competition promote political corruption. This incentive structure works to the disadvantage of opposition parties in poor countries. Voter bribery works because in the absence of community spirited candidates, most poor people tend to approach politics as realists seeking to meet their immediate material needs of food, jobs, shelter, security, etc. Many of these benefits come by working through rather than against government. Poor voters are likely to support politicians who are in a position to provide these benefits rather than those who articulate a grand ideology of freedom, democracy and clean government.by..MWENDA@independent

Househelps, maids, mboch, home manager — whatever you call them — cook, clean every spot in our houses, do the laundry and look after our children. They know some of our deepest secrets, and even know what the husband’s boxers look like. Without them, some families would be in turmoil. But before you know it, that woman who you sometimes ignore like furniture, or put under the microscope, could soon officially graduate into your children’s stepmother, yes, your co-wife. Lina Omare just could not imagine what attracted her husband to the poor tacky househelp. But the more she thought about it, the more she got confused. And the fact that her husband was willing to marry the househelp troubled her the more. Her husband, Noah is the general manager of one of the country’s leading banks, and Lina the human resource manager of a top insurance company. They had been married for 15 years. He was a respected church elder where they fellowship every Sunday, and the youth looked up to him as a role model. His humility and modest disposition, despite his position, were simply matchless. And his moral uprightness was unquestionable. In a world where all men are often tarred with the same brush with regard to fidelity, Lina often boasted about her husband’s commitment: “Even if I catch him naked in the same room with another woman, I will still doubt if anything really happened between them,” she would tell her friends. So she just could not understand what came over him to have stooped so low to have an affair with their not-so-attractive, and illiterate woman. It was the fear of hiring a house help that could entice her husband that made her decide against engaging Cynthia, the high school dropout who looked a bit more presentable and literate than Irene, now her co-wife. “I don’t not understand why my husband could not tame himself against his own househelp after he had endured some of the most tempting women of his life,” admits Lina. Lina remembers her husband effecting transfers of two of his personal secretaries and requested that he would no longer work with any female secretary because of their seductive tendencies. “The most tempting of all was his nightly encounter with Marion, the sexy public relations executive from the bank’s communications department, who often travelled with him for business meetings,” she narrates. Despite his ability to ward off these kinds of mounting pressures from women, Lina is surprised that her husband, who she thought could never look at another woman twice, could fall for their househelp, when there was practically no temptation. So you can imagine how the budding relationship between her husband and the househelp almost caused her a heart attack! She had never suspected anything until eventually, like nature would have it, the seed her husband and their house girl had sown in a relationship that had lasted about three months in her own house began to manifest — Irene’s two-months pregnancy! What infuriated her the more, Lina’s husband insisted that he was renting a house for Irene and pledged to support his baby and the mother! He could not take the blame for infidelity and instead, Noah blamed Lina for the mess. He told her that the househelp had something that she did not have. Noah said the househelp respected him. She made him feel welcome in his home. But why go in for a maid? What is behind the appeal of seducing an employee, specifically one who works in your home? Are women failing in their role as wives? Men claim that women today are not being wives. Career women, they say, have become so distant and aggressive that they have become a turnoff to men. “She denies you sex, she is moody and does not talk to you. So, you look for pleasure elsewhere,” says Patrick, a father of two. He confesses that he does not remember the last time he kissed his wife, because ‘She is never there’. “She always claims she had a difficult day and she is tired. And what do I do when I have a woman under my roof, whether she is a maid or not?” Agnes Zani, a sociologist from the University of Nairobi says men are emotionally driven beings who want their wives to show them that they are appreciated. She says that what attracts men to women is their femininity. This is the same way women find masculinity attractive in men. Unfortunately, women these days have become so masculine, distant and aggressive that they have become a turn offto men. “Many women use their salary and position at work to transform themselves from the beautiful feminine woman they are into becoming more masculine at home. This could be making feminine and submissive maids at home attractive to men,” she says adding, “the househelp makes their bed, washes his pants and even cooks and serves the husband food. Human beings by nature love a person who is close to them.” Some women are impolite to their husbands and this forces them to look for comfort elsewhere. “This frustrates husbands, who feel women must be submissive to them. The result is that the husband looks for an easy, submissive alternative around them for sex, and in this case, housemaids,” says zani. Magdalene Wangui, a marriage counsellor concurs that domestic workers are becoming so powerful that many marriages and relationships are threatened. She says cases of men sleeping with their helpers are on the rise, and most cases of infidelity she has dealt with has involved a helper. These women, she notes, are often younger, obedient, enlightened, single and struggling with financial issues, and many of the men they sleep with are doing well financially. With money and power comes a sense of entitlement. She adds that men like to use their masculinity to advance their power by picking on weaker people such as maids and young girls. “House girls in the present day are younger, wear stylish clothes, are more educated and because of their age they are vulnerable and available to their male bosses,” she explains. She says by nature power is attractive and maids are at risk because they may also be attracted to the allure of male power. “The power dynamic works both ways because maids are also privy to the private lives of those who pay them. Maids get to see their secrets. So, in a way, the bosses are beholden to the maid. She has power over them.” She warns couples especially wives from involving the maid in their personal conflicts by, for example, complaining to the maid about the wife or the husband. She tells women to get more involved in the house work even if they are not doing the job themselves. The intangibles She also says couples can also just agree to treat the maid as the employee of the wife so that subsequently, even though tasks are carried out by the maid, the instructions and intentions come from the wife, thereby strengthening the couple’s relationship. Susan Catherine Keter, author of the book Marriage takes more than love admits that house girls are a threat to the marriage institution. She agrees that physical appearance and good cooking will attract a man, but will not sustain a marriage in the long term. When the pressures of life catch up, children need to further their education, aging parents get chronically ill and bills soar, the job market becomes hostile and cut-throat; the man will realise that great looks and cooking are not all that he needs, as peace of mind is the number one need. “Marriage is more than sex, good cooking and the dressing code. She says you cannot compare a househelp who just does the house chores and ‘is always there’ to your wife who is working hard sacrificing her time with you to complement your financial contribution in the home,” she says. She blames men who leave their wives for the maids as having other problems other than the excuse of neglect, adding that the best thing wife can do is to let him keep her since the problem does not lie with the wife. - By BETTY MUINDI ....on THE PEOPLE
